Subtopic: Epithelial Tissue
I. IntroÂducÂtion
- EpitheÂlial tisÂsue (epitheÂliÂum) covÂers or lines body parts.
- It has a free surÂface exposed to body fluÂids or the exterÂnal enviÂronÂment.
- Cells are tightÂly packed with minÂiÂmal interÂcelÂluÂlar matrix.
- II. TYPES OF EPITHELIUM
- A. SIMPLE EPITHELIUM: SinÂgle cell layÂer.
- FuncÂtions in linÂing cavÂiÂties, ducts, and tubes.
- SubÂtypes- based on cell shape:
- 1. SquaÂmous: Thin, flatÂtened cells with irregÂuÂlar borÂders.
- LocaÂtion: Blood vesÂsel walls, lung air sacs.
- * FuncÂtion: DifÂfuÂsion boundÂary.
- 2. Cuboidal: Cube-like cells.
- LocaÂtion: Gland ducts, kidÂney tubules (nephrons).
- FuncÂtion: SecreÂtion and absorpÂtion. Often has microvilÂli (e.g., PCT of nephron).
- 3. ColumÂnar: Tall, slenÂder cells with basalÂly locatÂed nuclei.
- LocaÂtion: StomÂach and intestiÂnal linÂing.
- FuncÂtion: SecreÂtion and absorpÂtion.
- 4. CilÂiÂatÂed: ColumÂnar or cuboidal cells with cilÂia.
- LocaÂtion: BronÂchiÂoles, falÂlopÂiÂan tubes.
- FuncÂtion: MoveÂment of parÂtiÂcles or mucus.
- B. COMPOUND EPITHELIUM: Two or more cell layÂers; priÂmarÂiÂly proÂtecÂtive.
- LimÂitÂed role in secreÂtion and absorpÂtion.
- LocaÂtion: Skin (dry surÂface), bucÂcal cavÂiÂty, pharÂynx, saliÂvary and panÂcreÂatÂic duct linÂings.
- III. GLANDULAR EPITHELIUM: SpeÂcialÂized for secreÂtion.
- Types:UniÂcelÂluÂlar :- IsoÂlatÂed glanÂduÂlar cells (e.g., gobÂlet cells in the aliÂmenÂtaÂry canal).
- MulÂtiÂcelÂluÂlar: ClusÂters of cells (e.g., saliÂvary glands).
- Gland ClasÂsiÂfiÂcaÂtion by SecreÂtion Release:
- Exocrine: Secrete prodÂucts (mucus, saliÂva, earÂwax, oil, milk, digesÂtive enzymes) through ducts or tubes.
- Endocrine: DuctÂless glands; secrete horÂmones directÂly into surÂroundÂing fluÂid.
