Slime Mould

  • Nature: Sapro­phyt­ic pro­tists (feed on decay­ing organ­ic mat­ter).
  • Move­ment: Amoe­boid move­ment, engulf­ing food as they trav­el.
  • Plas­mod­i­um: Aggre­ga­tion of slime mold cells form­ing a large, mult­i­n­u­cle­at­ed mass.
    • Can grow quite large, spread­ing over sev­er­al feet.
    • Forms under favor­able con­di­tions.
  • Fruit­ing Bod­ies: Repro­duc­tive struc­tures formed dur­ing unfa­vor­able con­di­tions.
    • Bear spores at their tips.
  • Spores:
    • Pos­sess true, resis­tant walls for long-term sur­vival (many years).
    • Dis­persed by air cur­rents.
